This summer a unique event in Canada’s history hopes to capture the Canadian imagination to form a relay, similar to the Olympic torch, where two groups of volunteers will each carry a special package east or west to as many Katimavik host communities as possible across the country. Starting in in Iqaluit, Nunavut one package will head to Whitehorse, Yukon and the other will go to Goose Bay, Labrador where they will then be carried back to Ottawa, Ontario.The packages each contain:
Each package will be carried from town-to-town and province-to-province by a series of volunteers, called Voyageurs. The package will be handed off from one participant/group to the next heading back to Ottawa where they will be presented to the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Heritage and Official Languages and the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada who will become Honorary Katimavik Alumni upon acceptance. Everyone who supports the relay will be offered the opportunity to sign the T‑Shirt indicating their contribution to the successful outcome of this event. Furthermore, both the participants and general public will be invited to write in the journal how Katimavik has impacted their lives and their communities and why they think funding should be reinstated. Finally, every Canadian will be encouraged to sign the petition to be presented in the House of Commons in support of Charmaine Borg’s Motion M-352 calling for the reinstatement of Katimavik funding. Rallies or events will mark the passage of the relay through communities to engage and inform the local population. Also, on July 21 2012 the relay will join with the National Rally in Support of Katimavik in Vancouver B.C. and Moncton N.B. The story of the event will be recorded in video, pictures, writing and any other form of artistic expression participants can imagine. Each community who welcomes this event will be profiled on our website to both highlight their support of Katimavik and also raise the profile of that community. We will engage the Katimavik family (alumni and families, employees, partners), the general public and politicians at every level of government and affiliation. The relay is coordinated to end on September 18, 2012 in Ottawa, culminating in a significant rally in favour of Katimavik. That evening, Ms. Charmaine Borg MP is scheduled to debate a representative of the Heritage Department regarding the cut in funding. The motion is planned to be voted on later in the Fall 2012 Session of the House of Commons. Symbolically, the presentation of the gifts represents an invitation to become honorary members of the Katimavik family. The successful completion of this event will demonstrate the unity and dedication of Canadians to restore and maintain federal funding for Katimavik. |

Le colis sera remis hors d’un participant / groupe à l’autre de rentrer à Ottawa, où ils seront présentés à l’honorable James Moore, ministre des Langues officielles et du patrimoine et le très honorable Stephen Harper, Premier ministre du Canada qui deviendra honoraire Anciens de Katimavik à son acceptation. Tout le monde qui soutient le relais sera offert la possibilité de signer les T-shirts d’indication de leur contribution à la réussite de cet événement. La réussite de cet événement fera la démonstration de l’unité et le dévouement des Canadiens pour rétablir et maintenir le financement fédéral pour Katimavik. |
