Management Changes

On July 19, Rebeccah Redden took on day-to-day coordination and planning for this event. Support is greatly needed in both east and west routes to help us get to Ottawa. New simplified route has been planned and schedule will be revised soon.

In the West

The package is in Burnaby safe and sound. It will be in Fort Langley either today or tomorrow. Found someone to take it for us to Hope and from there I am not sure. Anyone willing to help get it to Canmore please register.

In the East

The shirt missed the connection to go to the Halifax Rally on Friday so we are currently in Charlottetown. Planning the next steps to get to Halifax. Again, assistance is requested.

Questions or suggestions please contact us: KatimaCAN@gmail.com

We have cut or will cut a number of destinations due to a combination of schedule constraints and lack of support.

We have cut:

Vanderhoof, BC

Prince George, BC

Quesnel, BC

We will likely cut (unless we can find immediate support and can schedule room):

Yellowknife, Northwest Territories

Happy Valley Goose Bay, Labrador

North West River and Sheshatshiu Labrador

Chisasibi, Quebec

West and East three week schedules are indicated below.

We also are asking for support to meet these targets. Please help.

(Le français est ici.)

Toronto, July 9, 2012 – This summer a unique event in Canadian history hopes to capture the imagination of the country and bring awareness and support to reverse the termination of federal government funding for the Katimavik program. Crossing Canada for Katimavik is a national relay to carry a package containing a green Katimavik T-Shirt, a Journal, a Map of Canada and petition sheets to Ottawa. Two groups of volunteers, called Voyageurs, will commence inIqaluit, Nunavut with one branch heading east to Goose Bay Labrador and the other heading west to Whitehorse Yukon. The Voyageurs will make their way back to Ottawa through a total of 50 Katimavik host communities crossing Canada by foot, bicycle, boat, car, plane and any other means available to them. As each Voyageur passes the package on to the next they will engage Canadians to sign the petition and write in the journal about the terrible loss of Katimavik. Each voyageur will also sign the shirt to show their contribution to the successful outcome of this event. In Ottawa the two shirts and journals will be offered to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages who will become honorary Katimavik alumni upon acceptance.

Katimavik is a 35 year old national institution through which 30,000 young adults provided full time volunteer service to their country while learning about Canada and themselves. 50 communities and over 500 not for-for-profit organizations in every province and territory of the land annually receive 600,000 hours of work. This program benefits ALL Canadians. The 2012 Federal budget terminated all funding for Katimavik. This funding cut resulted in cancelling plans for 600 youth to provide service to their country and leaving hundreds of not-for-profits without valuable volunteers for the remainder of 2012.

We welcome all Canadians of all political affiliations and regions to participate in this non-partisan event to support the ideals of Katimavik of working as a team for the betterment of ourselves, our community and our country. Help us cross the country by registering at http://katimacan.com/register/!

We also reach out to all communities and not-for-profit partners across the country to welcome and support this initiative. Within each community we want to encourage dialog between the residing MP and organizations in the community who have been affected by this cut.

The Saving Katimavik Alumni Committee is an informal association of Katimavik Alumni and supporters. They are not associated with Katimavik-OPCAN Corporation.

(English is here.)

A kiss has so many meanings. It can represent affection, affiliation or the kiss of death.

Another aspect that can be the kiss of death is complexity.

Many people have indicated support for Crossing Canada for Katimavik but the overly complex registration structure made it difficult for them to know what to do and how to do it. Therefore we need to assess; adapt and change.

We have introduced the KISS element (which unfortunately does not translate well to French):

Keep It Simple and Straight

Previously we had different levels of support with fancy names like Emissary, Pathfinder and Host but now all we have are Voyageurs. On our new registration form you input your contact information and select the portion of the route for which you are will be responsible for. The more people who sign up for a route, the more options are available on how that route is going to take place. By selecting a route you agree ensure it will occur. Please see our Terms of Participation for more information.

Unfortunately, this new structure means that everyone who has already signed up will have to do so again as we have changed the rules and structure. We are sorry for the inconvenience but as Katimavik alumni and supporters I am sure you understand the need to adapt and change.

Both are small northern communities in remote locations: Iqaluit with 6200 residents and Goose Bay with a population of 9,000. Both have a diverse mix of cultures and visitors from all over Canada. Both are the respective hubs of transportation for their regions with significant airports and people coming and going all the time.

And these were both towns that hosted Katimavik groups who worked for the betterment of the community. This is why we are in one, trying to get to the other.

However, the distance of 1233 Kilometers between these two towns is presenting a challenge for Crossing Canada for Katimavik. Despite the fact they both share many similarities, and likely have people travelling in and out every day, we are unable to find someone to carry a small package containing the symbol of our event: A green Katimavik T-Shirt.

Happy Valley Goose Bay Labrador

What is a historic, national event supposed to do?

The rule for the event says the relay cannot be achieved by Canada Post (which sorta defeats the whole purpose of having a relay of Katimavik supporters). Therefore, on this Canada Day 2012 we turn you to show that Canadians care about Katimavik.

We are seeking anyone who is travelling out of Iqaluit within the next week or two who happens be going East. Even Halifax helps as it is the gateway to Labrador.

La version française suivra…

Crossing Canada for Katimavik is national relay that will start on Canada Day 2012 and end in Ottawa on September 18, 2012.

The relay will carry two Katimavik t-shirts, a journal and map from Iqualuit, Nunavut to the east and west coasts of Canada and then back to Ottawa, visiting as many Katimavik host communities as possible. The shirts may be transported by any means available and everyone who helps will sign the shirt. Our main goal is to lobby the Government of Canada to restore funding for Katimavik but we also aim to enhance the stature of Katimavik in communities across Canada. This campaign is open to ALL Canadians who see the value of Katimavik.

This is national event to support the Summer of Katimavik.

Thank you and I hope you will join us.

—————————————————–
